TALK: “Hiriko Driving Mobility, the future generation of Basque Social Innovation”.

Originally conceptualized by the Media Lab at the Massachussets Institute of Technology, Hiriko Driving Mobility is Today a Basque enterprise aiming to reinvent the concept of mobility in urban context. Hiriko has been uniquely designed by Basque and US companies from new perspectives of architecture, energy, ecology, city planning and urban design, enabling a true paradigm shift in the way we address mobility. This new social enterprise reinvents the car as an object, and redefines the user’s relationship to metropolitan use patterns. The Hiriko vehicle is designed to be used in shared-use rental vehicle systems, otherwise known as “Mobility-on-Demand”(MoD) systems.

(Bilbao, 1972) Gorka Espiau is the Head of International Programmes at Innovalab. In this capacity, he is leading the international development of Hiriko, the first self holding electronic vehicle designed by the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (www.hiriko.com) and the launching of the Social Innovation Park in the city of Bilbao.

Espiau is a Senior Associate to the Centre for International Conflict Resolution at Columbia University in New York and a member of the International Advisory Group of INCORE, a joint project of the United Nations University and the University of Ulster. Previously, Gorka Espiau served as Senior Adviser for Peace Building to the Executive Office of the Basque President and is also a former Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace.

Gorka Espiau was the spokesperson for Elkarri, the Movement for Dialogue and Agreement in the Basque Country, where he served on the Executive Board from 1996 until 2005. Mr. Espiau is also a board member of “Social Innovation Exchange”, and a member of the “Transformative Leadership Council” and “Euclid, the European Network of Third Sector Leaders”.
